One Year Later: PS Classic – Is It Worth It? (Review)

Should we actually care?

Released on December 3rd, 2018 – the hype surrounding the mini-console was as real as it could get.

Nintendo came out with a pre-loaded console for their NES and was a massive success for satisfying our nostalgia.

Surely, it only made sense for Sony to jump on the occasion with their own version for the Playstation – right?

They saw the opportunity for it and unfortunately it became a missed one. Where did potential for something so right end up becoming so wrong?

For starters, let’s look at the games it offers:

Playstation Classic Games List

  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Destruction Derby
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Jumping Flash!
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Mr. Driller
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
  • Raymen
  • Resident Evil Director’s Cut
  • Revelations: Persona
  • R4 Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tekken 3
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
  • Twisted Metal
  • Wild Arms

There’s certainly a few classics among the list but they missed the mark entirely on what the people wanted. Games like Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider, MediEvil, Spyro – just a few of the classic titles that come to mind when associating the first Playstation with. Already losing major point here.

Now let’s look at it’s specifications: Console weighs about 170 grams (0.37 lb) and is about 149 mm × 33 mm × 105 mm (5.9 in × 1.3 in × 4.1 in) in size, approximately 80% smaller in volume than the original PlayStation and 45% smaller in width and length. It includes ports for both controllers, HDMI output, and power via USB. Problem is, half the gaming library is the PAL version which causes consistency issues, not to mention it’s full screen ratio. Another failure on their part.

..but is it actually worth it? One year later – yes, for the most part. Pricing has shot down so significantly that some retailers have made the product no more than 30$ on a permanent basis – for games like Grand Theft Auto, Twisted Metal, Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid, these alone are worth it. It’s also commonly known for being easily “hackable” (we can’t include it here but do Google it) – that adding your own library makes it worth that smaller price tag.

Given these factors, it most definitely is worth it one year later.. of course, granted if there’s a smaller retail price attached to it. It’s not the Playstation Classic we had hoped for but at least there’s little obstacles preventing it from becoming so.
