The Grudge (Spoiler-Free Review)

A film that should’ve been cut by at least 93 minutes.

The Grudge (2020) is the latest installment serving as both sequel and remake of a remake (?) in the American franchise. The Grudge is based off the Japanese horror film ‘Ju-On: The Grudge’.

I went in with an open mind and would judge the film based entirely on it’s own merits. However, being the only film of the American series that aimed towards an R-rating (in comparison to it’s previous films) should allow for more creative freedom.

Unfortunately, it’s entirely devoid of any creativity at all.

Despite some well-done special effects, it’s not enough to save even it’s all-star cast from the entity that’s the film itself. Wasted potential.

If I had to compare it to anything, anything at all, it’s equal would be an underwhelming handjob..You feel excitement at first which quickly dissolves into boredom.. then annoyance, and anytime it poorly attempts to make a cheap jump scare (and fails even at that gimmick) – it’s end result similar:

Unsatisfied and literally take anything to feel an ounce of pleasure from it. It is rare that I’ll walk out of a movie but having been literally the only person at this showing I grew envious of those who opted out from seeing it.

Overall: 1.5 / 10.
